About the Author

Ruth Colvin Clark, Ed.D., a recognized specialist in instructional design and technical training, is the founder of CLARK Training & Consulting. Dr. Clark is a past president of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), a recipient of the Thomas Gilbert Award for Professional Achievement, and author of six books on instruction and learning including the best-selling e-Learning and the Science of Instruction coauthored with Dr. Richard Mayer.

Want to know why sure instructional methods work or when they ought to be used? Want cognition to improve your believability as a learning expert with others? Based to a great extent on cognitive research, this book from well-known expert Ruth Colvin Clark provides the rationale for sound instructional methods.
The conceptions and guidelines in Building Expertise are mature, widely-accepted, and most will be intimate to readers in the training field. The book’s introductory three chapters explain in simple terms how the brain is thought to work for the duration of learning. Each later chapter focuses on a cognitive learning procedure and surmise the methods that exploration has shown help it. With chapter titles like “Leveraging Prior Knowledge,” the establishment of the book reinforces Ruth Clark’s thesis. Her thesis is simple, but profound: it is instructional methods, not media, that influence learning. Some methods work better than others because of the way our brains function. Some methods work better for beginners than for modern learners. The gems in this book are the occasional info on proficiencies that most times injure learning and when to keep out of the way of them. While there are examples and pictures of training that follow the guidelines, this is not a how-to book. This book explains why and when to do something, not how to do it. For that reason, Building Expertise may be of interest to learning consultants and training managers, as well as to practitioners who want to deepen their psychological result of perception learning and reasoning of instructional design.

As a high-school teacher I am finding this book an worthful read. The combining of perceptivenesses from instructional psychology and practical examples of instructional design make this an necessary read for all those who want to make their instructing more effective and who are dismayed by the some examples of poorly conceived e-learning that may be encountered on the web. I think this book is worth twice the price and deserves a very wide readership. It surely amply rewards thoughtful and careful study.

Every trainer will have to buy this book! For too long, the training field (and teaching) has had little exploration to back up the established wisdom. Now, thanks to the neuroscience revolution, trainers and educators are learning how the brain genuinely learns. That is why Clark’s book is so valuable. It has changed my instructing and training.
